Q&A interview with Mayor Kathy Chiaverotti

DiscoverMuskego.com recently had the opportunity to catch up briefly with Mayor Kathy Chiaverotti. You can read the Mayor's biography on the city's Web site, and contact her at kchiaverotti@cityofmuskego.org or 262-679-5675.

Published on November 2, 2017.

A little bit about your background, whatever you’d like to share.

Shortly after moving to Muskego in 1983, I got involved in public service through volunteerism, serving as executive director of the chamber of commerce, alderman, county supervisor, and now mayor.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

I enjoy going on hikes and other fun exploration with my grandson and other family members.

What are you most proud of accomplishing in your current role?

The revitalization of our main street, Janesville Road. I was fortunate to be in office to facilitate the design of Janesville Road through the county’s reconstruction project. It has defined and branded the community while re-energizing community pride and development. The "Great Places" Award presented by WAPA for Janesville Road was also received. http://www.cityofmuskego.org/765/New-Janesville-Road

What would you still like to accomplish?

There’s always unfinished business or new business to tend to. Continuing with our branding efforts and economic development are my focus to continue with the beautification and vibrancy of the whole community, as well as downtown.

Was there a particular defining moment or factor that made you realize, “I need to do this” (run for position)?

Well, yes. I had prominent individuals in the community encouraging me to run in 2011. I was reluctant until my husband challenged me to provide a reason why I should rather than why I shouldn’t. That reason was my love and passion for Muskego that shows through all my community involvement.

What do you think Muskego’s best kept secret is?

Our natural resources of lakes, conservation areas, and recreation trails. There is so much beauty and areas of tranquility among attractive neighborhoods and business services.

Why should someone consider moving to, or opening a business, at the former Parkland Mall site?

First, the award winning Janesville Road is an attractive and inviting shopping and gathering area. The Jammin’ on Janesville events have added to the excitement of being downtown. Existing and new families to the community are eager to welcome new business and services.

What advice do you have for those considering public service?

I would strongly encourage anyone who is thinking of a run for public office to do it for the right reasons. And keep an open mind, be a good listener, and leave the political buzz words aside. Decision making truly comes down to applying commonsense.

Closing thoughts – anything else that you’d like to share with our readers?

I’m grateful for having the opportunity to serve this award winning community, Muskego.
